Hidden box joint means the tenon is unlikely to pull out.

Note that the mortise was defined by chisel prior to drilling to prevent and excursions.

I used a drill after I chiseled a deep mortice in a door stile and when I couldn't get a good angle of attack I drilled out some waste in the bottom to help. I mentioned this to Paul Sellers thinking that's what he would do, but no, he said never and he hates it. Who knew?
