Hey everyone, I’m using a Whiteside router bit part# 3296. I was wondering if I should have my Bosch RA1166 rpms maxed or set lower. Please let me know! I did one pass on a customers box top made with walnut and it freaked me out. It was a little loud I guess.. I don’t know, maybe not!

Most charts I have seen say 16,000 rpm. for a 2.5" bit.

In my limited experience, two things I have come to know.Originally Posted by Terry Starch
First is that router bits are rated to run at the normal max speed of standard routers. So maxing out the speed should not cause a bit to self distruct.
Second is, that running faster produces a smoother cut than running slower RPMs.
So I would say run faster than slower.
With my 3.5 inch raised panel bits I run slower rather than at max. Just feels more comfortable. Others may do differently.
Also, I may take off material in three passes, rather than try in one pass. I am not a production shop. Time means nothing when you are retired...

I take off layers at a time for perfection also! I always have been told that’s who I am.
Well, I asked my dad about it and he noticed it was loud also. He thinks it may just be the router and it’s time for a new one!

I recently put a bullnose on a 3” white oak counter using a 1.5” round over bit. I slowed the bosch down to 4. Full speed just didn’t feel right. I got a very smooth cut. At full speed I just didn’t feel in control.
I practiced on a test piece first and very glad I did so.
