Rectangle Figured Claro Walnut Platter with Bowl

Here is the finished product that was posted a couple weeks back. This was a 13" long x 15" wide x 1-3/4" thick piece of dried lumber from Cook Woods offered in the turning wood sale section. With the grain running the short direction I decided to not make an elevated bowl with a rectangle footprint. The 8" diameter bowl resulted from turning the wings thin and maintaining thick center for stability, and then the bowl seemed like a good plan. Turning the outside of the bowl down at the platter face was a challenge due to the long reach and avoiding the wings. The piece is 20" across the diagonal and original wood had to be trimmed slightly to swing on Powermatic 3520. The piece was sanded to 400 grit and then buffed with Tripoli before each of 4 coats of a modified Danish Oil, and then a final Tripoli buff and Renaissance wax application. The wood section was just too nice to waste the corners cutting down to a round piece. Comments welcome.
