For sale is a Stanley Bailey No. 4 Type 15, manufactured in the early 1930’s, with rosewood tote and knob, the taller style knob, and the larger brass adjustment nut. This plane is a nice-looking survivor and works great.
Condition:
The cast iron base is solid with no cracks/chips/breaks, only minor scratches on the bottom. The iron is almost full length and is now very sharp. The tote was cracked and has been repaired. After the repair both tote and knob are in excellent condition with a nice finish after restoration.
Restoration notes:
The bottom has been lapped and also the front face of the frog. The original japanning was worn in spots, so it was stripped off and the base was painted with six coats of black ceramic engine paint, baked on.
The tote had a horizontal crack across the middle. The broken surfaces were cleaned and glued with epoxy. That repair is now almost invisible. Both knob and tote were refinished with several coats of shellac as a sealer followed by 2 coats of Minwax tung oil.
The back of the iron was flattened and polished and the leading edge of the chip breaker was honed to mate correctly to the iron with no gaps. The iron edge was hollow-ground at 25 degrees with a secondary bevel of 30 degrees. The edge was sharpened straight across and is perfectly usable as-is; if desired, adding a camber should be easy by tweaking the secondary bevel.
All threaded holes were cleaned out and oiled, all hardware cleaned and polished. All exposed metal surfaces have been treated with Boeshield T-9 rust protectant.
