    August Box making Project

With a deadline, to boot. Sept 1st. Cataract Surgery, Left eye....so, this will have to be finished before that Friday morning.
Left over Pine from building the Chisel Rack
    August Box Project, start with.JPG
There are a few items I need to remove...
    August Box Project, you too.JPG
    Yep...
August Box Project, needs to leave.JPG
Looks like a job for a Mitersaw?
August Box Project, Mitre Box & Saw.JPG
    Results?
August Box Project, knots are gone.JPG
I also found a Pine panel for the bottom of this box...just need to cut a few items for length..
August Box Project, cutting perfect 90s.JPG
so that I wind up with parts of a small box
August Box Project, too thick sides.JPG
And for a lid...with a collar to house the lid's panel..
August Box Project, lid too thick.JPG

Still...these do look a little too thick?
    Stay tuned..

So..set up the tablesaw to rip a couple items to width..that wide collar piece became 2 collar pieces..and they and that long stick were ripped to the same width.
    August Box Project, resaw saw.JPG
Reset the fence to 1/2" from the saw blade...and run a few parts through..
August Box Project, Resawn Collar parts.JPG
And the sides of the box..
    August Box Project, resawn sides.JPG
And the 3 pieces to make a panel for the lid..
August Box Project, resawn lid panel.JPG
Trying to make 3 boards look like one?

    Did have ONE kickback..
August Box Project, ONE kick back.JPG
These are all cut-offs..and one just happened to flop over after I was done with the cut...

I did manage to get one glue-up done, though..
August Box Project, 3rd hand, panel glue up.JPG
Need to get this out of the vise, today....so I can start on the dovetailed corners of the box...May not be "London Pattern" ones...but then again..I don't live in London..

    Stay tuned..

Panel is out of the clamps, cleaned and flattened...one end needs squared up
August Box, Sunday, trim a little.JPG
Not much...will have to build the collar to get the final size needed...nice to have a square corner to work from..

Same old, same old..pins first...trace around the completed pins to lay out the tails...then a dry fit
August Box, Sunday, 1st dry fit.JPG
    repeat 3 more times..and use a few clamps...but no glue..yet..
August Box, Sunday, Clamp dry fit.JPG
Because I needed to mill a groove around the sides along the bottom edge....and rebate the bottom panel to match

Small parts, smaller than the planes I might have used....tablesaw to plough a groove 1 and a 1/2 blade thickness wide...3/16" deep...then took a few tries to get the bottom panel to fit into all 4 grooves, and still close the corners....
    August Box, Monday Glue-up, bottom.JPG
I also needed a spacer made...to keep the long sides from bowing in during glue up...
    August Box, Monday Glue-up, spacer.JPG
That block plane did come in handy..to fine tune things...then glue bottle, a brush to spread the glue around, and then add those clamps back in place..
August Box, Monday Glue-up, photo bombed.JPG
    Let this sit overnight...
    Stay tuned...

Tuesday Morning...clamps came off...time to clean things up a bit..
August Box, Tuesday, leveling high spots.JPG
Check for square..looking for high spots..
August Box, Tuesday, checking for square.JPG
Like that corner on the right....
    August Box, Tuesday, clean-up.JPG
once all 4 sides were done, then the bottom was worked over..
August Box, Tuesday, level the bottom.JPG
I did try the Sargent #410c...but it was leaving a lot of black streaks behind...switched to the Stanley No. 4-1/2c,Type 11...seemed to do a cleaner job..then flip over and level the top edges..
August Box, Tuesday, level the top edges.JPG

So...tomorrow, I might get these 5 parts cobbled up into a lid, of some sort?
    August Box, Tuesday, NEXT !.JPG
Stay tuned...leave the lid panel flat? Or..raise the panel? We'll see..

    Lid work..involve a mitersaw..
    August Box, Weds., Messy.JPG
And a sander to fine tune things..
    August Box, Weds., sander.JPG
    Also involved was the tablesaw...
August Box, Weds., Cutting it thin.JPG
Both for running a rebate all around the inside of the lid's panel...to tilting the blade to 15 degrees to "raise" the panel....and also plough the grooves for the panel to sit in...

Then a glue up happened...flash mobbed by clamps?
August Box, Weds., forest of clamps.JPG
With a combo square to check that things are indeed square...

2 planes were in use, to fine tune the fit of the panel into the grooves...
    August Box, Weds., Some tools.JPG

Collar parts also got a slight round-over from the block plane on the inside corner above where the panel slides in...did it BEFORE the glue-up happened..

    Let this sit overnight...stay tuned..

Clamps came off today....plane was hard at work..
    August Box, Thurs., Fine tuning.JPG
Cleaning things up...then tried to match the box to the lid..
August Box, Thurs., matching box to lid.JPG
    As for that raised panel?
August Box, Thurs., Raised panel lid.JPG
Too fancy for a Pine Box?

    Was checking for high spots..
    August Box, Thurs., High spots.JPG
    And any gaps...
August Box, Thurs., looking for gaps.JPG
    Was a busy day..
    August Box, Thurs., Busy day.JPG
Also, all outside corners got a round-over, via that block plane...

Maybe tomorrow, I can add the hardware?
    Stay tuned...

    Hardware Installed..
    August Box Hardware, hinges installed.JPG
Hinges first....I also like to clamp the 2 parts together in the vise, whenever it can fit...keeps things from moving around..
    August Box Hardware, start here.JPG
And a few tools, too..next, flip over, and install the latch..
    August Box Hardware, latched.JPG
    And make sure it works...
    August Box Hardware, un-latched.JPG
Then add a couple handles, one on each end...
    August Box Hardware, handles added.JPG
Handles, on a small box? Well, easier to pick up what with the weight inside..
    August Box, Plane case.JPG
I also needed a notch for the plane's handle to rest in...
August Box, Plane case, test fit.JPG
This plane USED to reside in another, larger box that it shared with 2 other planes....one was shipped out, and the #78 has it's own case.....the old Stanley #39 3/8" was just flopping around inside the old case....now, it is held in place a lot better.

    Almost time for a PIP?

    Corner view....
August Box, Plane case, PIP hinge side.JPG
Hinge side view..and raise the lid..
August Box, Plane case, PIP, inside.JPG
Note: when I close the lid, it locks the plane in place...

A coat or 2 of shellac as a top coat, and call it good?

    Stay tuned..
