Thread: Hard Wax/Furniture Wax Removal

  1. Hard Wax/Furniture Wax Removal

    Hello,
I am having a very hard time removing old tinted wax from yellow pine. I have 5 doors, and lots of trim to do. Besides a razor blade, steel wool, and mineral spirits.
Does anyone have a better way to remove this stuff.
Attached in the picture you can see the bare wood when compared to the waxed wood.

Any and all ideas welcome, it's taking way to long.

    Are you sure it’s wax.
It looks like patina or oxidation that happens over time. Its also considered a awesome look for conifers especially Douglas fir. Not a easy color to recreate with stains and dyes
    Good Luck

Old woodwork usually was finished with orange (now amber) shellac or varnish. Why do you think it's wax? If it is wax, it should come off pretty easily with multiple wipings of mineral spirits or Naptha on a fresh cloth. If it's shellac or varnish, mineral spirits will do nothing but clean of the oil soluble dirt. So if it's not coming off, try alcohol. If it comes off, or at least starts to come off, then it's shellac. If nothing comes off with alcohol, then it's most likely varnish, in which case, stripping/sanding is the only option.
