I just bought a nice set of Stanley No. 40 Chisels with the black composite handles from Michael Rouillard, his prices are reasonable, shipping within the Continental US is free and I couldn't be happier. Just Google his name and "tools" it'll bring you to his site.

Yeah, me too. Agree with everything you mention. Forgot to include him in my original post. What I especially like about Josh and Patrick is that they will dig through their hoard (it’s mountainous - I’ve seen photos) to find something you’re looking for.

Thanks for the replies! As a power tool user, it hurts me to say I am slowly moving more in the neander direction, but it's true! At the recommendation of a friend who uses spoke shaves regularly, I ordered for rehabbing, a Stanley No. 52 off of E-bay. I plan on ordering a Boggs Flat spoke shave from L-N tomorrow.

What size blade replacement blade should I order for the Stanley No. 52? 2 1/8"?

You'll love the Boggs shave. It will absolutely spoil you.

Quite a bit of my knowledge on tools comes from reading Patrick Leach's monthly list and looking at the (tool porn) pictures.

Pat Leach, Hyperkitten, and Jim Bode are all good suggestions, although my perception is that they ask prices only a collector could love. If it's what you want it's what you want I guess. Walt at Brass City Tools (RIP) was more of a working man's used tool dealer. I picked up a couple items from him back in the day for super reasonable prices.

One of the best outlets I've found is Colonial Homestead in Millersburg, OH. Alas, no web presence and no credit card sales. It's a good place to get in trouble in a real hurry. Think kid in candy store. I've been to the old location downtown a couple times. They're in a new building now. James Wright did a little YouTube feature on the store that's linked below. I dunno about the others but Josh's prices (Hyperkitten) have seemed very reasonable to me as compared to the stuff I see on ebay. Especially when you consider that he charges super reasonable shipping and does not sell junk.

I plan on ordering a Boggs Flat spoke shave from L-N tomorrow.

I bought a curved Boggs from Anne of All Trades at a L-N tool fair years ago (2017?). That tool is a wonder of precision. If anything, it was beyond my skill set to get a good result from, initially. I ranted about it here back then. I eventually got the hang of it, but not before I ran out and bought a straight 151 and its curved counterpart (152? I forget), with their much wider throats. I still use them for quick and coarse work. One came in pristine shape from tooltique.com, which no one else seems to talk about. I highly recommend that source.

But the Boggs is to spokeshaves what a L-N 5-1/2 is to hand planes.
