Twelve years have passed since Willard Anderson wrote about the Howarth bow saw in Popular Woodworking, inspiring countless hand-tool lovers to take a stab at making such a beautiful tool.
I was one of them, with results best described as middling. Still, the elegance of the Howarth bow saw tugged at me as time wore on, and two months ago, when I sawed open a lovely two-foot-long log of black acacia, I thought it time to test Samuel Johnson's theory about second efforts.
The man who marries for the second time, Johnson said, represents the triumph of hope over experience.
To which I said: Maybe but what the heck, right?
