Shop time last night...6 mortises chopped

Shop time this morning..mortises #7, 8, 9, 10, 11 were chopped, and a dry fit was attempted

Both stiles will need a bit of bandsaw work..

After I trace around this pattern. I also need to clean up and flatten the stiles....then we'll see about a glue-up? Side #1 is out of the clamps, BTW...

Was easier just to mill the groove, than chop 24 mortises..all on the end on the stiles..

Assembly of the Webframes..

Involved these items, and a bottle of glue...and a square...glue on the tenons of the runners..square to set the runners into the groove on the stile...and then the clamp to pull things tight.

Hammer is to drive a pair of nails at each corner...

Next, center a kicker and pilot hole drill to set up for the screws

Use a square to set the other pilot hole and screw the kicker down...with a blob of glue under the kicker.

One frame hold the Top Drawer's kicker...then 4 for the rest of the main drawers...however, Bottom drawer has a different set up..

2 "kickers"? well, these 2 add a bit of support right at the bottom of the case, and support the face frame's bottom trim piece. I have to watch where these 2 go...

So that they don't rub the drill's chuck, while I am attach this frame to the sides of the case.

As all 15 parts ( to get 7 kickers?) needed resawn down to 3/4" x 1-1/2" x 14-3/8".....

Tomorrow, I get the 2 sides of the case to match each other EXACTLY....then run a rebate on the back stile of each...to house a 1/4" plywood back for the case...might take most of tomorrow's shoptime? Still have to BUY the plywood panel 1/4" x 4' x 4' handy panel....

May sort through the remaining planks..and see about 5 Drawer Fronts? and set aside enough for a bread board top? We'll see..

Stanley No. 8c seems to work just fine..

Feet needed trimmed to match each other...then the bottom edges of the sides needed to match up.

We have work to do...

Cut a plywood panel for the back...add parts to build a face frame with...then either a top or 5 drawers to build...

Ok...6 piece have been cross cut for length..and ripped for widths needed 2@ 2" wide, and 4 @ 1-1/2" wide..Plan is to cut 3/8" deep dovetails on each end. and chop the related sockets.

There is ALMOST enough room in the shop, to tablesaw the back of the chest from a 4' x 4' panel....panel is cut and installed..case was pulled square once one side was attached..

And THAT will be enough for today....

Back panel installed....had to set this on it's front, on top of the tablesaw last night....glue and screws along one edge..rotate the case on the tablesaw..pull the case into square with a long clamp...then attach the other side to the case..

then return the case to the floor......right leg is a bit crampy, this morning..

Cut for a tight fit, glue and clamps.....had to pull one or two frames straight..with an extra clamp or two...

Bottom Divider will need some bandsaw work...and I need all them clamps for the next 3 Dividers...

I did miter one of 4 corner braces, and installed it..

These also need a slot milled in them..as this will be where the top of the case will get attached to the case....with a screw & washer. Slot is to allow the top to expand and contract as the seasons change...always fun to do...as I have to reach inside to access those 4 slots...

I WAS going to do dovetails for the Dividers...but...

Don't the dividers need to be below the frame like you have them? I've never built anything like this but I hope to give it a try one day.

This is what I WAS going to do....but, the sockets would have to been chopped out with a chisel..and hope they fit the tail exactly...


Drawers will be 3/4 overlay...top and ends will get a rebate, but not the bottom edge of the front....Dividers and the top of the frames are to be flush with each other...

Right now, IF this crampy old right leg permits...the other 3 dividers need to be done....the bottom one will be a bit fancier...

needed to rough saw enough blanks for 5 drawer fronts..had just this left to choose from..

Bundle them up for a couple days..to get them used to being sawn..same with the parts to make a panel for the top of the case..

Alternate wide and narrow...all of these need to be resawn to 3/4"....MIGHT even have enough left over to add the Bread Board ends...if not..we do have a couple to chose from..

However,,,that is also the last of that 52 bft of Ash....drawer sides and backs will be Pine...drawer bottoms will be 1/4" plywood.

I do have a friend with a LunchBox Thickness Planer..( used to be mine, BTW)..MIGHT haul a few boards his way tomorrow? We'll see...

Steven, I am impressed. I get that I am working a demanding day job and you are retired, but you are busting this thing out in the sort of time frame that makes a retriever dog just sit down on the sand and watch while a greyhound comes zooming back from way far away; after the retriever dog gave up on the outbound chase.

Whenever I go to the shop to work...that is what I do...work. Other than taking the Photos people seem to want..there isn't any standing around going on. Rarely take a break until I am done for the day.

Today being a Monday...shop was closed ( unless I get very, VERY bored) but...a road trip to a friend's barn, where my old Delta 12" Lunch box planer resides..hauled those 2 bundles along...they are now within a 64th of 3/4" thick...left a hair to allow for planes...I also took along 2 shorter planks to take any snipe going on, and save the good stuff from the sniper...

Planer might have been a bit hungry, today..as it took a bite out of one end of a "good" board....seems there WAS a large knot hiding there...was. Friend happen to have a 3/4 x 6 x 6' scrap of Ash in his scrap pile...he threw that in with the rest of my boards...to replace the chewed up board.

Thickness was checked as we went, not trusting the depth scale on the planer...so..a Lufkin 6" Stainless Steel Caliper, No. 456 was set to 3/4".....most of the boards measured at a 64th over.. figured that was close enough. Bundles and the 1x6 plank are back in my shop, now....and I need a nap.

Monday means the shop is closed...so maybe tomorrow, I can get back to work? Wednesday I get to stock up on a stash of Pine 1 x 6s..to make the drawer's sides and back with...then maybe a bit of "Drawer Building 101"?
