Thread: Broken screw extractor

    Broken screw extractor

I want to make these, like a plug cutter, mainly to remove cut or broken off nails from salvaged wood.

What is a good off-the-shelf thin wall steel tubing or such, 1/2"O.D. max?

    Not talking about easy-out type.

Just get one of these. They are available in a range of sizes.

Yes, I have some of those. The grit I don't think would make a clean cut that could be plugged, but cutting that off and cutting teeth into the steel could work- thanks.

I've never had one break, I wonder how that happened. I've certainly had 'ezouts' break. But those are hardened, and well... I gave up and went to left handed drill bits for that anyway.

I use a roll pin or steel brake line from the local auto parts store. They sell it by the foot.

I happened to go to the "has everything" hardware store today, & got 5/16"x2 1/2" and 3/8"x2 1/2" roll pins for $4.33.

    Stay tuned...

Actually, they were 7/16" and 1/2".

7/16" one after a few minutes on the grinder and a test or two. Promising.

This is the nail pulled and a 7/16" plug cut from the same piece and glued in.
the nail was at an angle so the hole also drilled at an angle.
the nail was cut into but it didn't affect the hardened cutter.
No guide was used to start the hole but still pretty clean.

Not bad for $1.95 and fifteen minutes work- thanks Richard Coers!!
