Good luck in your search John. If all else fails, LN shockingly has all of their offering sizes in stock at the moment. First time in years!

Jeff, I did notice that, but I don’t care for socket chisels. We experience a wide range of humidity during the year and I would really hate for one to drop off the handle on to my concrete floor!! I kind of gave up on getting any used ones and ended up buying three MHG fishtails from Germany that get rave reviews though not well known on this side of the pond. Hopefully, they will get here soon. In the interim I modified some extra Narex chisels I have and I think they will work fine until the MHG come in.

Paul, I appreciate the suggestion. I have a couple dozen Pfeil carving gouges many of which came from chipping away. But, for dovetails I don’t think the #1 fishtail would do what I want.

The MHG look like nice tools. I was tempted to pick up another LN Fishtail but the cost disparity between MHG and LN has me rethinking that.

Rob, tracking says my MHG fishtails will arrive next Thursday. I will let you know my assessment. But, three MHG shipped cost what one LN would shipped.

    Hi John,

Do you mind sharing where you purchased your MHG chisels from? Fishtail chisels have been on my list and MHG might be just the ticket.

DIETER SCHMID WERKZEUGE GMBH in Germany. They do business as fine-tools.com. Here is a link to the fishtails - https://www.fine-tools.com/fishtail-paring-chisel.html. There is a 50 Euro minimum to ship to the US. The exchange rate is not good and shipping is high, but the three I bought totaled $165 shipped. One LN would be about $142 or so.

I too have been looking into purchasing some fishtail chisels and didn't know about MHG until mentioned here. Just ordered a set of three. I was seriously thinking of going with the IBC offerings from Cosman but hesitated at the price. Similar to what John mentioned above, one of the IBC chisels cost about the same as a 3 piece set of MHG chisels including shipping to the US. I think it's worth giving MHG a try.

Thanks, John! This is a great option, seems to be designed well and at a great price.

Received my MHG order today from Germany. Probably won't be able to give them a close look until later this month after returning from a short trip.
