    Craftsman Style Exterior Door Trim?

New construction which the siding will be board/batten. Going for that craftsman style look, using LP Smart Side trim boards. What I’m wondering is should I go with 1x4’s on sides and 1x6 on top? Or 1x6 for side casing and 1x8 for top? Looking for installation ideas and maybe little design ideas. My pre-hung ext door’s finally came in.

Our family home was Craftsman style. built in 1920. It is brick and had beaded brick mold for exterior casing. It was wider than modern brick mold, being about 3 1/4 wide. The same trim was used on sides and top with mitered corners.

Here are snips from the web, and the 1920 craftsman style house.

Wider and thicker will be better for a Craftsman look. Keep it simple. Here you can see how I did our interior doors, a very simple design that has worked out quite well:

(sorry for the rotation, it's the right way around everywhere else I look at it)

I had no idea the Gamble house offers tours of details and joinery. Look for other then the front door for ideas for your smaller door. I saw no pictures of the back door. The movie Back to the Future has some shots of the garage exterior. I understand all the interior shots are stage sets. No idea how accurate they may be

A look I really like for craftsman window and door trim is the verticals are slightly tapered top to bottom on the sides. The top piece extends an inch or so on either side.

Similar but this one is too much angle for my taste the top is too busy as well.
