    $21 dollar plane..

Picked while on a Road Trip to visit the Boss....A little town named Brandt, OH. has a "Junk Shop"...
    Found this INSIDE the store...
Buck Bros. No. 4, top view.jpg
Looking very much like a Great Neck No. 4.....that I used back in the 80s...
Buck Bros. No 4, side view.jpg
When I first started out using something besides a Stanley #110 as the main plane...I had the Great Neck version....

    Other planes seen?
Road Trip Saturday, Brass plated Junior Jack.jpg
Seems to be about the same size as a #5-1/4, Junior Jack....but..the sides were brass plated?
    Road Trip Saturday, not today.jpg
    Meh...not today..
    Road Trip Saturday, Red one.jpg
Methinks this MIGHT be a Sears brand...
    Road Trip Saturday, Details.jpg
Hmmm...no room in my shop for that...
    Road Trip Saturday, scrollsaw.jpg
There is the store..with a lot of tables out front..already have a scrollsaw.....there is a small garage/shed to the east side of the store...filled with loaded shelves...then when you walk through the back door of that small building..
Road Trip Saturday, The Back Yard.jpg
Part of a HUGE backyard, filled with....stuff..

Nice rest stop on the road trip...

Lever cap on the plane I bought, has a label...that reads
    "Buck Bros"

Might have been sold at a Home Depot, back in the day?

    Other sights..
    Road Trip Saturday, vise.jpg
There are all sorts of vises...
    Road Trip Saturday, out front.jpg
Some little, and some big ones..
    Road Trip Saturday, Beam drill.jpg
When the store is closed, they cover all the outside tables with tarps...and when the weather is rainy...There is also a tv camera watching over the front tables...

Road Trip Saturday, lots of shelves.jpg
Seems all the shelves are filled up...
    Road Trip Saturday, Woodies!.jpg
There are planes out in the shed...and a few inside the store...

US 40...there is a Stop light at Brandt...area is just north of Huber Heights, OH...From here, I went west to Phoneton's Traffic light,,, then west onto the Taylorsville Dam Park area...then into Vandalia, OH. Before turning south on North Dixie Highway....Daughter lives down in Dayton Northridge area....

Last thursday night..an EF-3 Tornado went through the Indian Lake area....I live about 14 miles due south of there...was one of 4 tornadoes to touch down that night...From Winchester, IN to Russell's Point, OH..was a LONG night.

Glad you made it through the storm OK. We had lightning and hail for a little while, but the worst went north of us. Working on a bunch of Preston tools right now getting ready to nickel plate. Maybe end of this week the weather will warm up enough to bring the chemicals up from the basement.

Spent a wee bit of time, this evening...sole of that $21 plane has been cleaned up, and waxed..
Plane, cleaned and waxed the sole.jpg
By waxed, I mean rub a candle all over the sole.

As for the iron and chipbreaker...took a while, but the iron is sharp...and the chipbreaker mates to the back of the iron much better.
    Test drive on pine..
    Plane, test drive.jpg
Then a few more adjustments( called "fettling"?) and try a few more times..
    Plane, getting close.jpg
    Was starting to get addicting..
    Plane, full bloom.jpg
    "Full Bloom"?
    Plane, full width shaving.jpg
Trying to get a full width, see through shaving....

Plane was made by Great Neck Tool Co., And sold at The Home Depot as a Buck Bros. brand. They also sold a block plane and a Jack plane....and $3 replacement irons...
    Plane, Buck Bros label.jpg
Label says Buck Bros....otherwise, a similar label would have said Great Neck....or Corsair...
    Plane, getting close.jpg
Just not too thrilled about the top of the knob, though...wonder IF I can sand those ribs off?

    Feeler Gauge, full drawer.jpg
    Along with 2 wrench sets....
    Model no. ?
    Feeler Gauge, model number.jpg

And this is where they will stay...

Decided to buy this plane, and a handle for a Hatchet...total cost? $15...

Plane is a 5-1/4 size...Sold by AMT...not sure IF that is brass plated...or..solid brass....

Photos once I get it cleaned up..

Second "cheap" plane this week...$19 for a #3 sized smoother..
Kenton Road Trip, Tin Cup, plane bin.jpg
It was the "pick of the 7 plane litter"
Kenton Road Trip, #6 Plane, 5.jpg
As for these 2...one was a plane shaped object.. the other was a $115 No. 6 Stanley...a wee bit above my budget..for the year ( besides, I already have THREE of them..)

Upon further review..That $19 #3 is a Lakeside...according to the logo on the iron..
    Lakeside #3, Big wheel.jpg
    Nice big wheel..
    Lakeside #3, chipbreaker, spring.jpg
Lever cap does have a spring...
    Lakeside #3, Iron, price.jpg
Nice thick iron..hole at the top?
    Lakeside #3, Made in USA.jpg
    Under the hood details...
    Lakeside #3, Twisted lever.jpg
Might be a Sargent made plane...for Montgomery Ward's?
    Sole doesn't look too hateful..
    Lakeside #3, smooth sole.jpg

Edge of the iron has seen a few nails? lots of chips to remove....Might take a day to make this plane ready for work..we'll see..

The $19 Lakeside has been rehabbed...while I was on Laundry Detail yesterday...took about the same amount of time as the Clothes Washer did..
    "Stern View"
    Lakeside Rehab, stern view.jpg
This is a #3 size plane...
    Front view..

A better look at the frog..

    Sargent, or....Stanley?

Looks good Steven. Lateral adjuster has a twist, so not Stanley. Maybe a Union after they were bought by Stanley?

Leaning more towards this being a Sargent made plane..

    As for that Brass plane..
    Lever caps:
    Brass Plane Rehab, lever caps.jpg
Compared to a Stanley No. 3...fronts..
Brass Plane Rehab, under the lever caps.jpg
    Undersides...springs look the same..
Brass Plane Rehab, Iron is done.jpg
Iron took a LONG (for me) time to get flat, square, and sharp...chipbreaker?
Brass Plane Rehab, chipbreaker, Spring done.jpg
Also needed work to lay gap-free on the back of the iron...

    Compared to a Stanley Iron/chipbreaker..
Brass Plane Rehab, long enough, maybe.jpg
In this case, one from a Stanley No. 3, type 11..
Brass Plane Rehab, compared to a #3.jpg
    Slots match up nicely....however..
    Brass Plane Rehab, bit different...jpg
    Hmmm...that might be a problem?

    Handles?
    BrassPlane Rehab, under the knob.jpg
That bolt is from the tote, BTW.....
    Stay tuned...
