Can I change the location of a band saw motor?

Hi. I'm looking for a 14" band saw that I can put on an existing cabinet, but most of the ones I find have the motor mounted down in the base. Could I mount the motor on top of the cabinet behind the saw and just get a different length belt if needed? I've seen some saws configured like that, but not many available for sale.

I don't see why you can't mount the motor the way you want. It should still work just fine as log as the pulleys are aligned properly. You would still need a way to adjust belt tension.

I've own both the saw pictured, and the enclosed base model. Saw is the same, just motor location is changed, so the answer is yes. Enclosed base model has a smaller footprint.

Did this with an old Delta 14". No issues.
