    Staining issues

I recently stripped a very old buffet, it's has some oak in it but not all. I applied a neutral stain and it turn orange, I've tried other stains and it still has a slight orange tint to it. Any suggestions?

You may have some lingering stripper and old finish residues. I use a fairly strong solution of TSP (not TSP substitute) or denatured alcohol for the final cleaning after stripping. If it is a delicate piece that is susceptible to coming unglued, the final wash has to be done with care.

The stripper can will list the appropriate neutralizer. Hopefully, that's what you used. To get around the stain turning orange, you might consider applying a coat of dewaxed shellac to the raw wood first. Rattle can shellac is dewaxed.

What's the point of using neutral stain? Maybe forget the stain and use shellac followed by your topcoat.
