Actually, this black-only laser printer's toner cartridge has lasted so long that I don't think of it at all and don't remember the cost since I last bought replacements years ago.

I put the same cartridge from the old printer into the new one.

Many Manufacturers are playing the 'how do I drive out cost' game.

It's two part. First the only definition of success, for most companies, is share price/share return. That's a hugely short-sighted problem that I do not believe will change. Secondly, consumers demand cheap goods.
