    New Bowl, AWESOME wood --pics--

I made this bowl this weekend. It is made with MescalBean root burl (also known as Texas Mt. Laurel) which is EXTREMELY rare in a size large enough to make anything other than pens. To get anything of any size, you have to dig up the root and then it is usually very poor condition with the heart rotted out. This was the largest piece I have ever seen.

The finished bowl measuers 5.5" across by 1.75" tall and is 1/4" or so wall thickness. It was sanded to 12,000 micromesh and has one application of BLO simply to enrich the depth of color. It has a natural sheen just from the sanding. It is a VERY hard, dense wood that polishes like plastic.

Please give me honest feedback on the form. This was the best I could do with this particular piece of wood but I still would like to know what you think of the form.

I know my pictures suck but they are the best I can do right now.

    Curtis,

I think your bowl form is really great and the figure in that wood is spectacular. I can tell it took a lot of patience to turn that piece.

I appreciate you giving the name of that wood as I would love to find some to do a few pens with now that I have seen it.

    Thanks for sharing it.

Awesome piece of wood there Curtis! As far as form...I think you nailed it pretty well. You curves are nice and you make two very nice directional transistions that are pleasing...And you finished it off with a nice conservative foot. Nice lookin' piece!

Wonderful, Curtis! Great shape and that wood is to die for. One point of contention, though: If it holds soup, it's a bowl. That, my friend, is art!!!

Fabulous, Curtis! You did a fine job.

And if you hold it "just so" it should work quite nicely for a scoop of Oregon Blackberry.

Wow! that is beautiful. I don't know art or form and stuff, but I really like that. The grain and finish is elegant.
