Build a case for some chisels?

At least one that looks better than this?
    3 NEW Items, H-F Chisel set.jpg
I think I can build something a little bit better than that plastic blister pack...

Maybe take a plan from Paul Sellers Masterclasses, and build a case?
Chisel Case Project, start on an end.jpg
    and..
Chisel Case Project, pattern for the back.jpg
Will have to change a couple sizes...
    Chisel Case Project, test pattern.jpg
Give things a little more "elbow room"? Maybe add a cross piece to the floor to support the chisels better?

Smaller chisels could be stowed away in the enlarged drawer?

    Lumber on hand, at the moment...1/2" x 5-1/2" x 24".....3 planks worth.

Will use the above Bench Top Organizer as a pattern...plus, I can dial up his videos if need be.

    Stay tuned...

Are you making this for those Harbor Freight chisels? If so, I'd just make it coffin shaped and bury it in the back yard.

Actually, those chisels are helping to build that case...and working quite well, too..YMMV, of course..
Chisel Case Project, lid and drawer parts.jpg
    One of the 3 planks...
Chisel Case Project, back, ends, base.jpg
Another was made into 2 ends, and the back of the case. Another was cut to make that Base...and parts for the front.
Chisel Case Project, matching the grain.jpg
While trying to match up the grain..
Chisel Case Project, matched the grain around the corner.jpg
    And..
    Chisel Case Project, layout markings.jpg
    On the ends...
    5-1/2" was a tad bit too tall...so..
Chisel Case Project, all ripped for height of case.jpg
All four sides are down to just under 5" tall....trying to keep the front 2 centered..1/4" off of the top and bottom.

Will run a rebate to house the floor of the compartment..and grooves in the back and ends..
Chisel Case Project, ready for lay outs.jpg
And then a few tools to lay out and cut the through dovetails..
    Chisel Case Project, needful tools.jpg
    Stay tuned, IF you dare...

Ha! Yeah, maybe they're fine. I've never used them, so I can't say. I own several HF tools, and some are not bad. Others, especially ones that rely on good steel, have left me unimpressed. But I'm talking about drill bits, files, hammers, wrenches, and stuff. I do have some cheap Buck Brother's chisels with the plastic handles that work. They don't hold and edge very long and they're awkward to hold with the heavy handles, but they do work. I still use them from time to time, even though I've replaced them with much, much better chisels. But when they're freshly sharpened, they cut as well as anything else out there. For a little while, anyway. And sometimes that's all you need.

Well, it looks like a fun project! So I will stay tuned!

I bought a set of them, mainly because they were about $9.99. I've not gotten them ready for use yet but they should be a good enough set for occasional use, where i don't what to use my precious chisels.

Had to make a run to Harbor Freight just now....as I use their Acid Brushes to spread glue around, when gluing up Dovetails or other such joinery.
This post is a Build Thread...on how the case was built ( it is awaiting glue at the moment) as about any set of tools could be stowed inside the case.
    Chisel Case, Dovetail, chisel selection.jpg
And, as long as a tool does the tasks I ask of it..I am happy. More concerned about how a tool does it's job, than who made the tool.

    Ok...
    Chisel Case, Dovetail, lay out.jpg
Lay out is done Pins first...have to work around that groove...a bit of saw work..
    Chisel Case, Dovetail, handsaw.jpg
Then a bit of chopping, show side first..
Chisel Case, Dovetail, chopped half way.jpg
Then flip over, and finish the chops..( sorry, I don't own a fret saw)
    Chisel Case, Dovetail, pins done.jpg
A little rough on the inside? Not to worry, the glue won't mind a bit...

Trace around these pins onto the "Tail Board" and bandsaw out the waste..
    Chisel Case, Dovetail, router work.jpg
Run the router a bit to clean up around the groove..dry fit?
    Chisel Case, Dovetail, dry fit.jpg
Tab is holding things up a bit...

Then repeat for the other end.
Chisel Case, Dovetail 2, 2 corner dry fit.jpg
    And, call it a day...

    Stay tuned..

    Well said,
How big will your box be when all done or should I say, how many chisels will it hold?

11-1/2" long, 5" tall..and 5" front to back...hoping for 6 larger chisels and 6 smaller chisels..between the upper Compartment and the lower drawer...depends on how big the handles are..

Front: First try was tails first, even did the layouts..

Chisel Case, Dovetail 2, front tails laid out.jpg
But, there were issues with that bottom corner...went back to Pins first,
    Chisel Case, Dovetail 3, needed a mallet.jpg
Because I needed to cover that groove...
Chisel Case, Dovetail 3, much better.jpg
    Took a while, but..
Chisel Case, Dovetail 3, Full dry fit.jpg
Dry fit. The "open" area is for a drawer...Compartment needs a floor, BTW...so
Chisel Case, Dovetail 3, needs cut down.jpg
I'll cut one out of this "Leftover" 1/4" Plywood panel....
Cross cut again, because I was about 1/8" too long...dry fit (again)
Chisel Case, Dovetail 3, panel a hair too wide.jpg
Wide was a tad too wide, as well...we have ways...
Chisel Case, Dovetail 3, plane until it fits.jpg
Removed a 1/16" off of both long edges...then try again....plane a hair more..then things fit together enough to dry fit the clamps..
    Chisel Case, Dovetail 3, pre-set clamps.jpg

Check for square...close enough, for now.
Legs are in BAD shape tonight,,,and do not feel like going to the shop, and trying to get the glue up done.

    Maybe tomorrow, eh? Stay tuned...

Well, a couple of them were on the job..without any issues..
Chisel Case, Dovetail 2, new chisel.jpg
Such as the 1/4" sized one.

Tip: I use a dog hole or 3 to hold chisels..
    Chisel Case, Dovetail 2, Mallet.jpg
Keeps them from rolling off the bench, and onto the concrete shop floor....or worse, like my feet.
Chisel Case, Dovetail 2, steps in chopping.jpg
And..NO the edges did NOT fold over like some claim they do...Sales Hype MYTH.
Chisel Case, Dovetail 3, new layout.jpg
The 1/2" wide chisel also saw a bit of work....

New brushes, as we will be doing a glue up, this morning..
Chisel Case, Glue up, New Brushes.jpg
    Needed a couple cauls..
Chisel Case, Glue up, Cauls as needed.jpg
The other end was fine as is..checked each end for square-ness..
Chisel Case, Glue up, one end squared.jpg
    And the other end..
Chisel Case, Glue up, both ends square.jpg
    Those C clamps?
Chisel Case, Glue up, clamped the floor board.jpg
Where the front edge of the floor panel meets the rebate...would be a bit rough to nail it in place...

Had trouble with one corner that did not want to close up...we have ways
Chisel Case, Glue up, busy bench.jpg
Used one or two to pare for a better fit. This is also the reason I am building this case...de-clutters the tool well.

    Old sanding belt?
    Chisel Case,Glue up,old belt.jpg
Was a bit full of metal bits, from Plane Rehabs, so, while I was getting those brushes..
    Chisel Case,Glue up, new belts.jpg
A pack of 5 belts, for just under $9...

Letting the case sit a spell...might start on a drawer next? need to get the base and the lid ready as well..
    Stay tuned...

Clamps came off this morning...wanted to get the outside of the case cleaned up..so
Chisel Case, Base and clean up, ends done.jpg
Ends were cleaned up..gaps filled as needed..then the front part was also cleaned up...then
Chisel Case, Base and clean up, back cleaned up.jpg
The back was also done up nice a smooth...which left..
Chisel Case, Base and clean up, top leveled.jpg
Getting the top edge where the lid will go..leveled out...

Not sure who was getting the work out, today.....that Stanley No. 3, Type 11...or..me...because..
Chisel Case, Base and clean up, flatten the base.jpg
This is to be the base of the case...and needed to be flat as the plane could get it...why flat?
Chisel Case, Base and clean up, start here.jpg
It will make doing a Thumbnail edge a bit easier...
    Stay tuned..
