I was wondering what is a good price for wood in small quantities? I'm looking at oak, maple, pine, and poplar. I got some hard and soft maple recently for $5.21/bdft and $4.27/bdft, respectively. I thought that was kind of high. Here Lowes and HD both have red oak for $5.30/bdft, poplar for $3.85-$4.65, and pine at $2.04. Woodcraft's maple was at $8.75/ft. But being new to buying wood, I don't know what a good or bad price is. I'm assuming these would be high prices since they're pre-cut wood, and rough cut wood should be cheaper. The maple I got was rough-cut and will need jointing and planing to be usable.
So what's a good price if I just want to buy 10-50 board feet at a time, and where is a good place to get it?
