    mixing and matching woods help

Occaisionally, I see someone trying to be creative using different species of wood. Generally, it is a dark wood followed with some light colored trim wood like curly maple.

I don't want to point out anyone's project as an example, either good or bad, but there are times I look at a finished project and say to myself that "WOW, that looks great" or "this light, dark design element is simply not working".

Again to speak in general terms and hopefully convey my question; Is it a design mistake to use a dark wood as the main wood and mix it with a light wood when making, as an example, a shaker styled piece of furniture?

In my eye, Shaker furniture is simple and needs a simple wood such as Cherry to create continuity.

Are there any rules of design that would be helpful when choosing wood species for various types of furniture styles, such as modern, shaker, contemporary, early american, French provencial etc?

    Thanks Joe
