    Recently completed wine cabinet

It's been a while since I've posted any completed projects, since I've been unusually busy with work and haven't had much shop time. I started this project last December, originally intended as a Christmas present for my Father-in-law. Obviously, I missed that deadline. I got it cut out and mostly assembled back in December and it has been taking up floor space in my shop ever since. I finally got a couple of days in the shop and finished it.

    Here are the details:

wood: Solid maple with birch ply back
    size: Height 79", Width 45 1/2", Depth 13"
finish: 1. aniline dye, 2. tung oil, 3. 2 lb cut shellac (sprayed on)

This design was my own, although I spent some time looking at lots of pictures of others done to get ideas. The major challenge was the scoop cut pieces up top- The first try, when I assembled it, they flexed when clamped and I wasn't happy with the tightness of the Mortise and tenon joints. Then, I maded support braces on the back of each piece to stiffen them, which worked just fine.

I'm fairly satisfied with the project and intend to make another one sometime in the next year or so, since I've already cut out most of the pieces for it. Any constructive criticism is welcome.

very nice, good design too, will it be a stand alone or will it be installed in closet or some other type of enclosure?

I like that Ernie. It has a nice feel to it.

Very nice piece, Ernie. Is the color the darker one in the first 2 pics, or more brown, as in the 3rd and 4th (and the one below I tweeked in Photoshop)?

Thanks. The 3rd and 4th are more accurate- I think the lighting was bad when I took the first ones. It was raining outside and I was relying on shop lighting.

Larry: It will go in a wine cellar but, stand by itself. I plan to make another one to match it for next year. I made it like a piece of furniture instead of a built-in so my in-laws can take it with them if they ever move.

    Ernie,

It looks to me like it would be perfect as a "built-in", especially with a matching one. Again, very nice and a great gift.

    Ernie,

Great job. Nice to finally see it done, I bet.

Your joinery looks nice and tight, this is over and above for a Christmas gift, I'll say.

    Next project? Corner Cupboard?

  8. Looks very well done.

How did you figure out the size for the bottom bays?

    Cheers!

Stu: a combination of looking at pictures of others and measuring wine bottles. Since I'm not a big drinker, I only had a half dozen wine bottles in my house. I had to go out and buy more, just to lay out the dimensions.

Nice work, I've been considering converting a pie safe to wine cabinet and yours helps with the storage questions.

That is a very nice wine cabinet. Fit for the best tasters!

Now you only need a couple( err... make that a couple dozen ) bottle of wine to fill it up!

That is nice. I have a buddy that would kill to have a wine storage rack like that. Excellent!

Nice to see you are willing to make the needed sacrifice to get the job done!

Maybe that explains why I had to redo the joints on the upper portion
