H&L conversion to PSA

My Makita 5010 ROS works great except that it goes through the H&L pads too fast. I've heard it is possible to convert to PSA, can anyone give me details on how to do this?

May be your technique Gary.
Too much preasure will eat up your sand paper and pads pretty fast. DAMHIKT.
Just the weight of the sander should be enough to do the job.

Yes to your question. Check your parts list. Some machines have a PSA pad availlable.

Well, I got the same answer on another board as well. I'm sure this is the problem as I use this sander for lots heavier work that just finishing. I see the answers are (1) lighten up on the pressure (2) get another tool for the heavy paint and stock removal.

I haven't tried this myself, but a local tool dealer has told me that an old H&L pad which doesn't work well can be sanded down to smooth and then used with PSA disks.

Yes. I've done that. Just sand the nubs off

Thanks again for the suggestions. I'll try sanding the H&L pad down. I did try removing it, but it seem like it wanted to tear into the pad. Nothing to lose by trying since this pad won't hold at all anymore.

I'll dig around and look my sanders over.
I have the same sanders [3] with psa pads.
Seems I have H&L pad also.
I don't use these sanders much anymore, so may have some parts, etc.
Used one of them just yesterday, and its developed a motor noise.
I'll be back, as Arnold says.

I've used some H&L to PSA adapters that will allow one to swap between the two just by removing the adapter.

I have a couple Makita sanders, both were weak on the H&L end. I bought a new pad for one (around $12-15), but then found a PSA to H&L conversion (2 for about $5). As suggested, I sanded the hooks off, but then put on the PSA to H&L converter, and have used it for the last year or more.

Maybe the problem isn't Hook & Loop... Maybe the problem is MAKITA's H&L.

If you are putting too much pressure on the sander it will heat up the paper and pad. As Tyler said let the tool do the work. If you change out to PSA and still apply pressure you will still end up with problems. Dick B.
