This is a quick question - until recently, I didn't realise that Bocote was an oily wood. The first piece I turned from it was coated over directly with a water-based polyurethane coating, which dried easily. The piece is now in the loving care of someone else. However, I recently turned a second piece, which I coated with an oil-based polyurethane, and the finish turned sticky and wouldn't dry properly.

I've got a dewaxed shellac I can use for coating the second piece, which isn't a problem, but I'm concerned about the finish on the first, as I've never yet had a poly coat dry over an oily wood without first sealing it with shellac. Is there a chance that this oiliness may interfere with the coating over time, and would I be better off getting the piece back and refinishing it?
