Very nice Steve! That is an heirloom piece to be sure. It sure is a behemoth.
The cherry panels look great.

Sawdust is some of the best learning material!
Nicely done. Looks great with the BE & cherry. Seems as you slipped into the abyss for err.. like 2 years though?
The UP'ers do have maple coming out the wazoo..... man I LOVE BE maple but can't seem to get over the price that comes with.
Cheers.

The finished project is awesome. Fantastic job.
How was it working with the birds eye?

Thanks everybody for the nice comments....much appreciated.
Karl,.....you can't rush perfection.
...besides that it has been done for a while, just now getting around to posting pics...and it was a thread I left hangin....
....the birdseye maple does take a little extra care to avoid ripout, but I enjoyed working with it. I had a bit of trouble finishing it, but eventually won that war.
A little more "eye candy"
Woo hoo! That turned out wonderful, Steve!

The most expensive tool is the one you buy "cheaply" and often...
Very good looking, and the contrast of the cherry and maple is great.
I know it was here a minute ago ???
Great looking job. The birdseye maple look fantastic. Here is a thought. Your friend milled the birdseye maple. Imagine the anticipation of when a sawyer is about to dip his blade into a maple tree, not knowing whether it is a birdseye tree or not. I understand there is no way to tell. I think it is a throw back to being a kid full of discovery, when the first piece falls, and you see the beautiful birds eye. Cutting it at the right angle is necessary too. So squaring up the tree and checking the sides is important.
Anyhow great find, beautiful wood, fantastic looking project. I like the blend of woods.
