Apple NE - first for me

This is the first Natural edge bowl that I have turned. It is made from crab apple wood and came from the split between two trunks. It is a fairly easy wood to turn and has a lot of color difference between the center and outer edge.

It almost did not survive as there was a spli the full length of the bowl that needed lots of CA. The tenon also broke off and the bowl was launched across the room. I then friction chucked and turned the rest of the way. Lots of sanding later and this is what turned out.

The diameter is 12 inches and it is finished with oil and buffed.

Great job, Joe! It's a nice piece of wood and the finished product has a lot of character.

Great job Joe. My first NE had blood stains on it. How'd it work out for you?

Love it. I call those kind "unnatural" edge bowls. For me it's normally stuff discovered on the woodpile, sometimes after first rejection, where the piece suddenly appeals on its way through the stove door. Reminds me very much, in design, of this piece from last winter.

Great job (and save) Joe. That difference in the rim height really makes the piece for me. Great color and finish too. Eau Claire's a great town - I spent five years at UWEC (I'm sure it would have only been four if it wasn't for Water Street...)
