Here's another item for the toolbox. It is a Merlin pinless moisture meter. The look and feel of the meter is very nice and includes a rubber armored case. The meter was made in Austria and purchased from Bailey's for about $340 (no association).
Have not had much opportunity to experiment with the meter but I plan to plane down a thick slab and compare moisture readings along the way with my neighbor's pin-type meter. Maybe do an oven sample or two.
So far the meter seems to be accurate on what wood I have tested including some furniture items in the house. Wood finish does not seem to affect the meter but it does not work well on pieces less than 3/4" thick.
