    You won't believe the PM I got!

    PM in this case is Philip Marcou...a great plane! Not a "private Message"...however the message is a great one...Well I get a fair amount of PM's and they are usually a thanks or a question I am glad to try to answer...if I know the answer
    This PM was even better .....a lot better. a Philip Marcou S20A low angle smoother.... Amazing to behold! The weight 8 1/2 pounds! On my first test trial ....figured Shedua smooth surface while planing either direction! Yes it happened... Check the construction of this baby...its the real thing! It really works ...not something beautiful to spend its life in a glass case...like a bottle of wine ....too fine to drink

    The bad news....this is a "Have Gloat Will Travel" kind of a story...beautiful...great to hold ...but she is not my baby
    She is with me for a review which I am glad to do
    Then back to Wiktor and the review goes on his site...
    She has been traveling ....made in New Zealand by Marcou of Zimbabwae then she moved to Albequerquie , New Mexico and last night she slept in my home in Laguna...no not in the shop....my other planes get a bit jealous over the shinny body and she needs to acclimate ...New Mexico is warmer

    That's not fair! Think of your other planes! You will spend with them the rest of your life and this little lady you prefer over them just for a night? Shame on you

    Philip's smoother looks awsome! And familiar! It is the Real McCoy. The S15 I have has such a sense of Authority, like no other plane I have used. It is an Experience to experience this. I suspect that the S20A will have a performance that is the same as the S15 (the "S" stands for "smoother" and the "15" and the "20" refer to the angle of the bed, so the S15 is a smoother with a 15 degree bed, and the S20 is a smoother with a 20 degree bed). I also have a little parental involvement with the S20 in that I had Philip make this bed choice available (not that I had any input otherwise into the design). For a dedicated smoother, one that is unlikely to be used on a shooting board, then a higher bed is better so that the bevel angle may be reduced - the edge should then have more penetration and last longer than one with a high bevel/low bed angle (current LN and LV bevel up planes have a 12 degree bed, the Holtey #98 has a 22 1/2 degree bed, and the Stanley #3 conversion I recently built has a 25 degree bed).

    Thanks for the info...I can't believe the mass and feel of this plane...I may try it on this Sapelle bed I am making....drawer faces may be Bocote...which is tricky to plane... The mouth adjustment has a screw on each side and can be skewed to the iron ...I don't know what difference that would make usually a tight mouth is better with figured woods...we shall see. the knob and tote are wenge...it is very special!

    I don't bother with the mouth adjustment any more. Frankly, Philip could just as well make them without this feature (it is a perceived advantage more than a real one when the other important factors are built correctly). In any event, the mouth is not as small as some planes, so I just leave it in its "small" position.
