    Plane Collecting

I see a few of you are interested in Stanley planes. Did you see the Stanley #1, Type 1 that sold on Ebay last week for $5,200 (not a typo). You can still view it by doing an ebay search for item no. 300098335485.
Some weeks ago a Bailey's (pre-Stanley) iron smooth plane with split frame sold for $7,134 and was in terrible condition though extremely rare. That item no. is 140087343711. There are collectors and then there are investors.

Are the investors the buyers, or sellers in this case?
$7k is around the most I'm hoping to buy my next used car for.

More power to them (both buyers & sellers)....too rich for my user blood.

    Stanley No.1 Plane

First off I want to say I did bid on that plane. It is not a type 1 rather a type 5 or 6. I tried to tell someone else on another forum the box isnt correct for the plane. I am almost positive. You may find a newer model plane in the box preceeding its type but never a plane that is older than the design on the box. The type one box would be light green with picture lable. The yellow boxes with dark green lable were introduced aruond 1899 up and had the picture of the plane along with number and info. Then they went to a block lettering with no picture, After that the Scroll lable which the box in the auction is. I may be wrong, who knows, ask the guy who forked out $5k for it.

    I'll stick with my #3 for $35.

If you haven't gotten hooked on old hand tools take a big dose of castor oil & run & take another dose each time you think of getting into the hobby.

This will leave more less expensive tools for me.
I usually find it much easier to be wrong once in while than to try to be perfect.

    Stanley No. 1

Clint - interesting description about Stanley boxes, thanks for that. I was amazed at how quickly that plane jumped in bid price - not the usual last minute race. I'm an avid ebayer since the interior of British Columbia is not much good for mining old tools or machines.

Bart I've got a better deal going, pick a #2 SH w/ a partial label, along with 6 offbrands in one trip to the dump.

I don't collect old tools, but I have a good colllection of them.

It's amazing to see how much people are willing to pay for the rare ones... Me, I'm satisfied to nab the rusty later-types (up to WWII vintage or so) and give 'em a dip in the citric acid tank and some TLC.

Does anyone actually use a #1? For something besides catching dust while sitting on a well-lighted, marble pedestal in an undisclosed, secure location?

Plane collecting is a terrible disease that there is no known cure for. If you know whats good for you, when you see planes for sale run like the wind. I didn't and now I'm just a shell of my former self (especially my bank account).

Have seen more boxed No.1 than these. A little TP for all the collectors.

About use. I have an LN #1 and it is small. I solved the use problem when I simply cradle the plane rather than trying to hold it like traditional plane and it works fine. It's nearly impossible to get any good feel the usual way. My block planes could do much of the same work. I have used it to good advantage for small tasks. Harry
