Texas Cedar Elm lidded box (bowl?)

This is a Texas Cedar Elm (Ulmus crassifolia) lidded box I did recently. It is 5.5"x1.75" and is finished with Deft gloss lacquer. It is a crotch piece that had some really neat red colored spots almost like knots but no quite. It is also spalted. The knob on the top is Texas black walnut.

At first I didn't care for the shape of the bowl with the lid overhanging the rim. But the more I look at it the better I like it. A very interesting piece of wood that lends itself towards your design. The finish appears to be very well done. Great work.

That's a beauty! That wood is very nice. I've never heard of it before, there's always a new kind popping up. I really like the style of the box too.

I'm north of you in Kyle. Sure like your work. The pen and the cedar elm bowl are great.

Curtis I like it, that Cedar Elm sure has a lot to say and your form lets it speak loud. The Walnut knob is a nice contrast and the finish looks flawless.Great job.

That's a beautiful combination of ingenuity, form and finish. Well done. Curtis, is Cedar Elm the same thing we call Salt Cedar up here in the panhandle?

    Allen,

Salt Cedar and Cedar Elm are NOT the same thing. I don't believe they are even related at all. Cedar Elm is a true elm that only grows in Texas I believe. Here is more information if you are interested: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/o...rassifolia.htm

Great piece of wood and after viewing it a few times, like Terry, I find I do like it quite a bit. A very nice piece, Curtis.
