    Marking Technique

OK, I'm at my wits end.
    I've got a job that's a painted part that needs a part #
I was going to just laser through the top of the paint
and leave a light mark. Turns out the paint thickness
isn't consistent enough. So I burned through the
paint on some parts. Next option, laser through the paint, Cermark and laser again. Mark doesn't stick, turns out the part is aluminum
not steel. Next I'm trying to oxidize the parts with marginal results. I'm thinking about masking and painting next. Any one have any ideas?

Perhaps blast through the paint down to the metal underneath and then color fill with a contrasting paint color?

Maybe use a grey color and a light setting so it doesn't go all the way through and uses the small dot pattern? Maybe 50% black with low power settings?
