    Holiday Ornament Practice Piece

I have never made an ornament so I figured I better do some practicing before we have the ornament exchange. I know Curt said no pictures but this one isn't the one I will be using for the exchange. SWMBO has already claimed it.

Its Box Elder burl and Cocobolo. 3.5" tall and hollowed out to about a 1/16th" thick, it's light as a feather. The finish is CA.

Two pics, same turning. One inside and one outside hanging in the tree. Can't decide which I like better so I figured I would post them both.

    Comments/Critiques always appreciate.

    Happy Turnings,
    Shane Whitlock

Oh no Bonnie, don't say that! They are very easy to do and ya have about 2 months til the exchange to practice.

Well I'll definitely need the long practice period!!!!

How did you attach your string?

I was going to use a brass eyelet but I didn't have any so I just took some gold metalic thread, dipped it in some CA glue and stuck it in the small hole I drilled for the eyelet. I will probably pull it out and use an eyelet when I get one.

    good Job Shane!

I've been pondering what I am going to do. You got a quick start...

    Bonnie,
I am sure any Creeker will be delighted to hang a Bonnie Campbell original on their tree!
Just cut off the parts that don't look like a bowl...

Wow, that's pretty! You just seem to have a hard time making anything that isn't amazing.

For a hanger, I go to Michaels craft store and get some pins with an eye on one end of them from the jewelry making stuff. You can get them gold or silver and they're a lot smaller than any eye screws I've ever been able to find. Just drill a 1/32 hole and glue them in with CA.

Now that you got that practice out of the way you can get to work.

    Another great piece!

Very nice! I don't think I'd change it to an eyelet, you've got a real good look going right now.

    Shane,
Please describe how you went about making your ornament for us newbe's out here.

I completed a class on bowl turning yesterday and managed to NOT throw a bowl blank or bowl across the room trying to get it chucked up or turned. The guy in class next to me managed to do it twice and just missed me by a few inches each time.

Hopefully with 2 months (and a whole tree) I could come up with an ornament.

    Thanks

    Wayne

Wayne here's a good tutorial on doing these. Pretty close to the same way I did mine. http://www.woodcentral.com/articles/...cles_337.shtml

Great job Shane. Looks like you got it down. It's a beauty.

Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.
