    hey greg

this is a tough one. i'm not from sac but get down there pretty frequently and would love to find a good source of exotics.

there is the woodcraft store on folsom. also there is this place http://www.woodartthailao.com/ - fellow's name is tedley - they import several species from the far east. and i think there is a higgins somewhere that carries some exotics.

    here's hoping someone knows more.

what part of northern ca are you in?

Hi Jerry, Thanks for the info on Sacramento. The wood sources seem pretty slim there. I live south of Eureka. I get most of my hardwoods at Almquist Lumber in Arcata.

Have you tried EarthSource in Plymouth? I go to their Oakland store and am quite pleased. If you're not familiar with them, here's their website: http://www.earthsourcewood.com.

P.S. Wish I lived in the North Coast too. Absolutely love it up there.

I've heard good things about these guys

Not exactly Sacramento, but within driving distance. Never bought from them, but I've heard they are decent folks.

One of David Marks' shows was a tour of hardwood suppliers in NCal, he also mentions these guys on his website -

    Mount Storm

    Good luck

    Hi,

I live north of Santa Rosa, and I've bought wood from Mount Storm. They have a pretty good selection and will sell smaller lots, mostly surfaced. They only sell the rough stuff in large quantities (like thousand-dollar worth, from what I've heard).

Another recommended place is Macbeath in the East Bay (I think Oakland), but I haven't been there myself. They have a website, too.

    From another local sacramentan

First try Hughes Hardwoods (just off sunrise south of 50, I was just there today). Also try Higgins hardwoods over by Cal Expo (other side of the freeway). One other place is Aura Hardwood (in same general area as Hughes) but a much smaller selection of exotics.

  8. Try Auburn Hardwoods on Nevada Street (just off Grass Valley Highway) in Auburn. They have a nice supply and the store is one of my favorite "window shopping" sites. It's a bit of a drive from Sacto but well worth it - or at least I think so.

and California hardwood producers was once upon a time a nice candy store, but they are closing out their stock. It's possible you might find something tasty there, but you'd be wise to call first. They are just off 49 in Auburn.
