Yippeeee!!! EC is really done this time....

    Howdy,

Well tonite was the nite!!! I played hookie from work this afternoon to get the final coats of poly on the wife's EC. It has taken me three months to build, but I have only really worked on it for 7 days during that time. Making a living is really getting in the way of my woodworking!!!

It's inspired from the one in Oct. '03 WWer's Journal. I had to make it bigger to fit our equipment and I made a couple of other changes, but it's pretty much the idea atleast from the magazine. I really like the hinged stiles that allow the doors to open flat against the sides of the case.

It's all white oak. I resawed a bookmatch for the door panels from a really nice wide board. Matter of fact all the solid wood in the EC is from some sequenced boards that I was lucky enough to find at my local mill. The side panels are white oak plywood. The stiles on the case are cut from the same board as the door stiles etc... to try and achive a really nice consistent look to the piece.

The finish has been a problem child...or I'm a problem child when it comes to finishing....I'm sure you probably read of the trouble. I got the match good enough to suit me. The stain is a 50/50 mix of cherry and dark walnut with a few coats of satin poly.

We got it wrestled into the house and loaded all the equipment. Glad Payton was around tonite. Believe it or not, everything worked on the first try!!!!!

    Thanks for looking,

    Terry

Here it is in it's final resting place. These pics still don't do the wood justice, but you can kinda see the tiger in the door panels. Looks much cooler in person.

Looks terrific Terry....I knew the bookmarks were going to look good but I didn't relate to the doors until I saw the picture of the doors all the way open.....great job.

Terry, that's well done. You're right I was following your finishing saga. I', glad you stopped to fix the sides, I think they look 100 times better then the previous stripe motif. Nice work. Lars

Looking GOOD Terry, very nice work, beautiful piece of furniture.

I agree with you about making a living getting in the way of woodworking, fishing, or anything else for that matter. Must be a better way, sure do wish I knew what it is! Oh well, eleven more years and I can retire!

Again beautiful job on the EC, congratulations on a successful project.

    Terry,
Looks terrific! Great proportions and design! The finish looks excellent too. Looks like that beer in the fridge is going to good use.

    Great work Terry,
That must be the key element I'm missing in my work. A really clean shop. I'm going to give that a try in my next project.
    Thanks for sharing.

Very attractive piece, Terry. It does a good job at supporting the "hardware" while remaining a really nice furniture design. Great Job!

Thanks everyone!!! It's been a long journey, but the end result was worth it. It was a good project that I really enjoyed....until the finishing stage.

    Lars,

Yup, the finishing was quite a deal. Never dreamed the plywood was going to do that to me. It took lots of messing with it, but I finally got it to blend in pretty well.

    Terry,

Cheryl was still smiling really BIG this morning. She has really wanted a EC for a long time. She really never thought much of the big TV being exposed. It feels good to make her that happy!!

    Tyler,

Try it, you'll like it. Honestly, I feel that keeping the shop clean and organized really does help me with any project.
