I have a couple small dark grey stains probably put there by my clamps. I have been told that oxletic acid will remove them. I can't find it locally. Is this a good stain remover? Would a diluted solution of beech work? The material is soft maple.

If sawdust were gold, I'd be rich!

Paint stores, real ones probably not the fake ones at the borg, often have oxalic acid. It used to be in little boxes, alone with things like whiting, and pumice. It's probably now in little tubs along side the same things. It might be labeled wood bleach, so read the labels of packages labeled that way.
Rockler carries it.
There are wood bleaches which have 2 parts - one with peroxide; the other with sodium hydroxide. These really work well on woods with high tannins such as oak or mahogany to lighten the tone of the wood.
Then there is oxalic acid. Liberon market this, which is available at Woodcraft and other sources. This is what you want to use, I think.

It shouldn't affect the color of maple.
