    Question Hinge placement question

    I'm almost eady to start mortising for the hinges on this cabinet I've been working on, and off, for what seems like forever. Oare there any general "rules of thumb" for hinge placement. A set distance from top and bottom? a proportion of the height of the door? This is a chimney cabinet. Top door is 45" tall and 15" wide. bottom is 35 X 15. I'm using exposed ball cap brass hinges.     My .02 cents would be three hinges on the taller door , 3 inch up from the bottom and down from the top , center hinge equal distance / centered between.

    Match the up / down spacing used on the 45" door on the 35" one , so either 3 or 4" .

    How long are the hinges ? Sometimes I'll space that top and bottom spacing to the lenght of the hinge barrel that shows.

    So how that for a waffle

    I like to align butt hinges directly across from the inner edge of the rails as in this photo:
