Thread: Quartz in my plywood

    Quartz in my plywood

Pictures speak louder than words. This is a piece of rose quartz (I majored in geology, not hard to identify) firmly encased in 3/4 plywood. I wish I knew where I got it. It's at least a year old cut-off laying around the shop that I ran through the saw this morning to make a jig.

Ya think my blade needs sharpening?

    Was that natural grown plywood.....

I guess millions of years ago when that plywood was growing some rose quartz got in.....

Well that is a kick about the blade, but you will have to admit that its kind of funny to find something like that in your plywood.

Yes, I'd expect eventually to find a small screw or part of a machine... But, a hunk of rock?????

Dang... too bad it wasn't limestone as it would have just caused a bit of dust. Quartz is tough stuff :/

Lose any teeth or can you just resharpen?

Quartz fractures quite easily. The teeth actually look fine and cut fine too. I cut for about 1/2 hour before seeing the intruder. No chips in the teeth!! If it was a piece of basalt... It'd be a different story.

You sure it's not some crystalized ham sandwich remnant from a factory worker in China?

I thought the lead went on the outside of things made in China, not in the middle?

Our plywood supplier rep was by couple weeks ago with a utility knife (thin & flat) that was smashed into the lams in a sheet of 3/4" ply. Oddly enough, the knife had a big kerf in it from the panel saw. Ruined a perfectly good utility knife.
