Carob bowl with textured band

8.5 x 3 inch Carob bowl. It is finished with watco danish oil and rubbed out with a fine scotch brite pad. I have not had a chance to sun it yet, lots of rain right now.

This is from a badly rotted tree I got from a tree trimmer. Most of the wood was so bad it was useless, but I did manage to get a few hunks solid enought to turn.

As always critiques are welcome.

I have been playing with my photo setup so I welcome critiques on the picture as well as the turning.

Mike beautiful piece of wood, and I like the texturing band. How thick are the sides of the bowl? They look a little heavy to me. The picture is great.

I always wish you'd post a pic or two of your bowls from a higher angle so we could see more of the nice wood.

But then he would have to hollow more than the top 1/2 inch

But seriously, the bowl looks great, and I like the band. The wall thickness is fine to me. Makes it look like an old relic that was dug up - decorated, but substantially utilitarian.

The photo looks good to me. Just enough shadow to ground the bowl in the picture.

How thick are the sides of the bowl? They look a little heavy to me.

I wanted the thick rim for two reasons.
1. Their was some curl on the rim that I wanted to show off.
2. I was going for a rugged look on this with the simple shape, no foot, satin finish and extreme slope on the wide rim.

This was kind of an experiment since for the size of this piece I wanted to keep the weight down. I dropped the wall thickness down quite a bit once I got past the rim.
I do not usually measure the sides and am terrible at guestimateing but I will give it a shot. I would guess the rim is about 5/8ths. I dropped the wall thickness down from the rim to a little over 1/4.

I have not decided how much I like that part of it yet. The look and overall weight of the piece is right where I wanted it, but when handleing the piece it seems a little top heavy.

Not sure if any of that makes sense to anyone.

Curt I am severly photo challenged usually ( though I am pretty happy with this picture) so taking one picture is hard enough. I usually take a bunch of pictures of the outside then go through them to find the best one. While the higher angle pictures show off the wood more, for me the money shot is the low angle picture with just a hint of rim that shows off the form and curve of the piece, so that is what I try to take.

I think I have my picture setup zeroed in pretty good so I will try posting pictures of the inside as well in the future
