Project Pics: Birds eye maple box

Here's a box that I just finished in time for christmas. It's birds eye maple with walnut pins and a walnut handle. The finish is just boiled linseed oil on the outside, wax on the inside, and the bottom is lined with velvet.

It was inspired by "A Small Elegant Box" on finewoodworking.com. It was very tough to glue up (I need more clamps) and tough to get smooth, but shaping the sides and the handle were a pleasure.

Let me know what you think.

    Cool

Jeff, that's a beautiful box. The birds eye maple you used is excellent and the walnut pins and handle provide a pleasing contrast to the maple. I like the way you joined the corners.

As for clamping I'd suggest something like this:

I bought two of them when Rockler had them on a half price sale last year. I was amazed at how easy they are to use. I agree with the description on the Rockler website, "Easy-to-use ratcheting handle allows for true one-hand operation and fine precise adjustments."

    Love that birdseye!

I like the lap joints. Gives it an offset look from the end. Looks nice.

Very nice Jeff. Nice choice of wood too. In my area, Birdseye Maple that nice is hard to come by.

    Wow

Very nice. I remember that issue. I read that article a number of times and always wanted to make that box. Your is as good or better than the FWW one.

    Thumbs up

That's some pretty slick joinery Jeff. Nice to see something a bit different. The box looks great!

    Jeff,
Very nice indeed. Do tell, what are the dimensions and what do you envision it being used for? Just curious.

    Jeff,

Very nice!!! What are the dimensions of your box? It looks a little taller than the box in the FWW article.
