Utility vase...

Well sort of anyway. My first turning of 2008 is made for my step-mom, she wanted a little vase for her antique measuring spoons in the kitchen. This is Maple burl and 4 1/4" tall and 2 5/8" at the widest point. I made it a little chunkier at the bottom since it will likely be knocked around and I don't want it falling over.

Anyway, have at it.

Kevin....nice utility vase.....What's your finish? I have a piece of maple burl on the lathe right now. Just came in for a fresh cup of coffee. I'd like to use your finish.

Ken, I shouldn't give away my secret... to how lazy I am. I use Watco Natural oil and let it dry overnight after burnishing as much as I could dry on the lathe then sprayed on a couple coats of Satin Deft from the rattle can. Actually I really like the Satin and semi gloss look and the Deft is so easy to work with it is my go-to for quick projects.

Nice little piece Kevin. That wood has great features. I'd say the fiinish is appropriate to the use. No sense putting hours of finish time on something that won't keep it a year.
