Plant stands -- design help request

My wife would like me to build three small plant stands. I would like your help on design and materials suggestions.


here are the parameters:

3 stands of progressively greater heights -- from 18 inches to about 24 inches.

Probably about 12" by 12" in width and depth.

They will stand side by side.

She envisions a small "table" design. What I mean is that it could be like a "see-through cabinet" with or without a bottom. ... so ... three parts -- two sides and a top.

She wants a "thick" appearance -- which could be attained with a face-frame.

I don't know if I should just use three pieces of hardwood ply with edge tape, or three panels of hardwood, or plywood with a face frame ... or something else.

Please share any thoughts, point me to any plans that you may know of or post pictures of similar projects that you may have done.

Don't know if this design will help. It is only two tiers high, but could easily be modified to accommodate another level. Materials are maple legs (painted black) and spalted maple rails (with scarlet aniline dye). It is about 12 x 12 x 14. I used 3/4 melamine for the shelves because of their superior surface for moisture, etc.
