Thread: a finishing question

    a finishing question

For our finishing experts: a friend of mine is finishing a guitar he's building. He has put on several coats of Tasco tung oil, with proper sanding in between coats, on the quilted maple top. It looks fantastic but he's wondering if he should leave it as is or add anything on top of the tung oil, ie. satin poly, etc.
    Thanks for any input

I hope it's an electric guitar. Oil on an acoustic guitar is generally considered a "no no". The "traditional" top coat for guitars both electric and acoustic is nitrocellulose lacquer.

Well...is that "100% tung oil" or "Tung Oil Finish". The latter is just a wiping varnish and may not even have any tung oil in it. If the latter, nothing else is needed. If the former, shellac or lacquer would be the finish of choice. But Yoshikuni makes a good point about the guitar format and the finish...the wrong finish can greatly affect the tone.
