    jointer knives hitting infeed table

    Hi All,

I've been trying to align an older Grizzly 8" jointer and need advice. I shimmed the tables and they are co-planar. Then I shimmed the cutterhead because it was tilted -- more of a gap on the fence side than on the side with the switch when referenced off the outfeed table.

I set the outfeed table such there was a 0.015" space between top-dead-center and a straight edge spanning the tables. When I set the knives with a 32nd of an inch showing beyond where they are held in the cutterhead, they bang into the infeed table.

Should I remove the shims on the cutterhead?

    Thanks,
    Gil

I have an older 8" grizzly, and my knives have always been 1/8" up from the cutter head, and they clear the outfeed underside by at least 1/16". Raising or lowering either the outfeed or infeed tables will not change their relationship to the knives because of the way the tables slide.

You have something way wrong. Either you have used very, very thick shims or you put in the wrong head, or something.
