    Asphaltum on Walnut

Since I mainly do mission style furniture, may favorite recipe is asphaltum mix, very easy to use and does not take alot of time.

I recently had a chance to build a dresser and night stand out of walnut. I used a witches brew finish for them.

With a piece of scrap left over i decided to try some asphaltum on the walnut to see what would happen.
It came out really good. I guess the asphaltum really highlights the grain.

The pic is to large to upload, but here is a link-

I sanded the board to 180 grit, applied one coat of asphaltum, then 3 coats of blond shellac.

    Thanks

    Hello Dave,
    Interesting look.
I've used a pitch finish on both treated pine and cedar mail box posts, then top coated with spar varnish.

    Thanks Rich-

I know this is not everybodys favorite look for walnut, some even think I ruined a good piece of wood. But, if you were to see it in person, it looks like an antique finish.
I took the test board downtown to a high end antique shop and compared it to some of the furniture there. It was a close match to some, in fact my test piece could be a little darker and would pass.

    Thanks
    Dave
