Make friends with the Highway Dept.

I got a phone call from a buddy on the highway department. He told me there was a log at the transfer station that I might want. So Saturday morning I went to take a look. He told me he put it to the side because he knew I like the ugly stuff. I had to cut a couple feet of off each end to get the best part in my truck. I will be going back tomorrow to pick up the rest.

Stats: 5 feet long, 4 1/2 feet across and 3 feet thick, approx 1200 pounds. That is a guess because my 1/2 truck was dragging on the ground.

The pics aren't great, but the burl is a thing of beauty.

Not Sure if it is Red Maple or not. There is not enough clear bark to tell, but when I cut one of the ends of, the wood looked alot more like Sugar Maple. The street that it came from was mostly hard maples on one side and Silvers on the other. I just don't know which side of the road it came from.

Wow. What did you use to get that beast into your truck bed? Definitely post pics when you cut that bad boy up.
