    Red Oak lumber

I am wondering what some of the SMC members are paying for rough cut/dry red oak lumber in their respective markets. The best price I've found locally (Central Kentucky) is 1.66/bf.

The cheapest I've found is at M&G Sawmill. Theirs is $2.25 for flat sawn and $3.55 for QS...both kiln dried.

That $1.66 would be a smoking deal around here.

Around here too. Great deal. I don't think you can get ANYTHING here for 1.66/bf

You might ought to jump on that price. I just paid $2.33 a bd ft for rough 4/4 red oak. Thats here in central texas.

    Wes,

What grade is that lumber? FAS for $1.66 would be great; for 3B Common, not so great.

$3.50-$4.50 here in Utah. And thats from a friend. But that is in small quantities, less than 100 bf.

Personally I'm not a big fan of RO - prefer WO. RO is a bit too hard and splintery and tends to dull blades in my experience. Plus I much prefer the look of QSWO over QSRO. To each his own, I guess.

The last red oak we bought, about a year ago, in West Tennessee was $1.00 bf. We got lots!! LOVE the stuff--my house is full of it.

Here a good rate is about 3.40 S3S. I guess rough might be around 2.95.
Im alos not a fan of red oak. It has been used so much throughout homes and country craft I convulse around it.
I do like the smell when cut and hardness of it. Ive used it for blocking and even some paint grade pieces. I was getting the stuff for 1.00 bd ft cut offs. 49 long 2-4 wide.

In Southern Indiana I get air dry red or white oak for $1.20/bf, kiln dried $1.80/bf for either. Kiln dried hard maple is $2.00/bf, cherry is $3.15, walnut is $4.00, all fas, gotta love it.
I do it right, cause I do it twice.

The last I got I paid $2.10 for 4/4 rough, but that's been a while. It's interesting to see the difference in prices close to where it's milled and a good distance away due to the shipping. And the differences will probably only get bigger.
And now for something completely different....
