    quilted mahogany table

this table is one of three pieces i'm making for the texas furniture makers show-the top is one board of quilted mahogany from the famous tree found in 1965,it's 37in.wide and 13ft.long the base is ribbon striped mahogany, the cross pieces are goncolo alves, the base knocks to five pieces for easy moving.
you can read about this wood (the top) in fine woodworking#54- 1985 sept.-oct. edition .

i will post pics of the other two pieces later.
    thanks all

Great work! It's a shame you used the wood for that, though. I'd have given you...oh, two or three bucks a foot for it.
And now for something completely different....

WOW!!! What Bill said! That is a gorgeous piece of wood on a well designed base.

If you are looking for a place to put the table after the show, my office in our new home needs a desk. It would actually fit.

Beautiful table, Edward. It will be the star of the show. I love the arch in the base. The finish?

Does the table have a future home yet?

Will you be making the chairs?

cary-no the table does not have a home yet-the finish at this point is 14 coats of sprayed lacquer next will be at least 3 coats of catalyzed varnish-then it will be rubbed out with pumice and rottenstone-the finish is being sprayed on by sam blasco (,his shop is just across the alley from mine) sam sprays i sand-the end result will be a french polish look. the arch came about after i made the base -i first made it with the strecher a foot longer and found when i sit at the ends my ankles hit the through tenons so i cut 6"off each end but this made the center space between the the post that are holding the two cross pieces 12" longer-so i made the arch to balance that unevenness -the arch is cut from a 2"thick piece of goncolo it was 16"wide and 5' long.it took about a week before i could bring myself to cutting it-i had planned a hall table from that piece of goncolo for about 10 years.
i had planned chairs but now don't think i'll made them.

don bullock if you are serious about buying this table get in touch.

Really is an honor to be part of this tree's story... Now if I could just keep Alex's whiskers out of the finish
