    1st HF, spalted oak

I have not had much time in the last few months but have really wanted to try some hollow forms. I had a little chunk of oak with some spalting and decided to give it a try. the rough blank reminded me of an apple so I tried to turn that shape. I added an ebonized maple finial. Definitely a fun time and I will turn more. I was able to get the walls fairly thin but was worried about cutting through it so stopped. it is 3.25"w x 4.5"h. finished with antique oil and buffed.
    Thanks for looking,
    Ben

Benjamin, nice form. I especially like the way the maple was colored (ebonized) - with what did you do that? Mike

Mike, i used india ink this time though there are many other ways to do it including steel wool and vinegar.

Benjamin that is a great looking first HF. Make sure you date it and keep it for future reference. You need to get you a figure 8 calipers. Makes it a lot easier checking the walls.

Benjamin - congrats on your first hollow form! Interesting form and a good looking finish! Hollow forms can become addictive - so you have been warned! Have fun with it! Looking forward to seeing HF #2!
