    tilted birch NE

I had a design in my head that when looking at the bowl you could see right in it with one side up much higher than the other, Now that it is done I am not sure I like it. My wife says it looks like a baby cradle. It was one of the hardest open forms I have done as it was never anywhere near balanced and I had to keep the speed down real slow. Also this is the peice I was making the mdf vaccuum chuck for when it bonked me in the back of the head, I needed more clearence between the tall wing and my lathe.

It is 11" wide and 8" at it's tallest point and finished with buffed AO.

Please tell me what you think both good and bad and sorry for the poor pics but my normal backround was to small.

Bob - I think you did a great job on this! Nice form and lots of bark - couldn't ask for anything more! I turned a similar style bowl out of maple burl and like how you can see the inside of the bowl when it is sitting on a shelf - makes it a little more inviting!

Hope the head is healing by now!

I think it looks pretty cool Bob,I agree with Steve. Odd/ly shaped forms are... to me anyway, more attractive as they present a challenge one can learn from and this one is no exception. Very well done indeed, thanks for the inspiration to attempt these type/s of turnings .

Nice work! I really enjoy the bulbous NE forms. Can't wait to see more!

P.S. I have experimented a little with 'lopsided' NE bowls. A high-side design works particularly well on a shallower, more traditional bowl.

I like bowls that are different. I like this one alot. The ability to see the inside while looking at the outside is nice. Some bowls have to be displayed at a certain height to get the best view...this one give you more options. I would want to pick it up and hold it.

    Bob,

You've got a great looking natural edge bowl there. You did a good job with the curve, keeping the bark on and the finish.

You mentioned that you're not sure you like it. Think about this idea for your next one. When I've looked at the idea of offsetting edges, I've laid them out so there are no two natural edges that are coplanar. In other words, after shaping the outside of the bowl, change the orientation of the bark edge to about 30 degrees off perpendicular to the ways. You'll end up with something like this from a straight log.
