How to make a rear tote

    Greetings Fellow Neaders and Galoots!

Yesterday's neighborhood estate sale yielded a Bailey # 6. A rare find in a 10 year old suburban development where the average age is probably mid-40's.

I've got it in the spooge tank (phosphoric acid) to kill the rust and will polish the metal parts this afternoon.

It also needs a new rear tote, hence the query to you all knowing, all seeing Neaders! Does anyone have a tutorial for making rear totes. I thought Professor Smalser had done one but I can't find it. Google was not my friend for some reason.

So if you've go plans, instructions, tutorials or other tote making advice tucked away in a corner of your hard drive please share it with me.

Thanks, Tom, in Houston, contemplating a nice block of walnut or cherry and a rasp.

    Tote making

Here's one of my favorites set of tips -- especially for drilling tote holes.

Just a note to say thanks for the repost of the links. My father was just asking me about this 30 minutes ago!

Maybe I will have a lucky day and things will fall in all day like this....... No, I know my luck.

I dont have a how to but main thing is the holes and they need to be drilled first with a x-long drill or from both ends..

Read Cian's how to page as I think he has a few on handle making...

    Hi Tom.

I picked up a tote pair from Highland Working about a year ago. They work just fine on my 1950s Stanley/Bailey #7.
    Best Regards, Ken

    Tom,

Here is an excellent tutorial from Clint Jones.

You need to PM Greg here, he makes the finest handles I have ever seen...

The machine work is perfect, 10x nicer than Stanley's IMHO

Alf had a good tutorial here. It's pretty easy to make a tote. Finding rosewood is difficult so I usually make them out of cherry. I figure if it's good enough for Thomas Lie-Nielsen, it's good enough for me.

But you can use a variety of woods - walnut works well, also.

I recently procured a plane with his tote and knob on it and I can attest to the fine craftsmanship. Simply beautiful.

    Hi,
Thanks for the kudo's. I would go with John's(rarebear) method as mine requires lots of (sorry about this) power tools and lots of sanding.

    Thanks, Greg

I'll second this opinion. I picked up a couple macassar ebony totes and knobs on eBay. Awesome stuf!
    cheers
