    Curly Maple Shelf

Just finished this one. A unique piece of curly western maple with a neat live edge. Finished with Daly's Profin. It's almost 6 feet long and roughly 5/4 thick. Thanks for looking.

Beautiful piece of wood! Dramatic effect in place and the live edge is what makes it - aside, of course, from the figure! Well done.

That's a nice use of a beautiful piece of wood. The figure and live edge is amazing.

Very nice looking shelf. How is it mounted to the wall?

I used hidden shelf brackets (mirror clips) . It's the first time I've tried this. The shelf is fairly secure , but it sagged a little, so I used small wooden wedges underneath to get the shelf level. Rockler sells some that seem more robust than the ones I used.

Very cool! I really the overall look. I think it would work with any wood, but that tiger maple just really gives it that extra added touch. Great job!

I agree with the others, especially Jason. This is outstanding in that curly maple

    Neat.
My only comment other than I love curly maple... is I hope you leave some room between the pictures etc that will live on the shelf. I'd be a shame to cover that piece up!

Did you pop the grain or just use BLO or something similar? That grain looks unreal!!! I wish more people would utilize wood this way (live edge that is)

I used a coat of Benite to condition the wood, then an oil based finish called Profin on top of that. The grain was so pronounced on this piece just about anything I did would have popped the grain.
